threw me over his shoulder as I screamed with laughter.

MY DAY IN THE OFFICE started like every other day, except something seemed different. Kevin was quiet, and he was avoiding me. We had grown apart in the past couple of months and I had no idea why. He was happy to see me after the New Year. We even had lunch like the old days. Then, day by day, he started changing; the happier I was, the more he seemed preoccupied and uptight, not the usual easygoing Kevin I knew. It seemed we were being hit in every direction with work, but that was never an issue before. We had survived other times like this; we had even survived mergers together. This time it was different, something had changed. I sat at my desk watching him walk in and out of his office not once actually looking at me. He then stepped out of his office and didn’t move from his door. I felt him watching me.

“Monica, I need to talk to you for a minute, please.” Hearing him call me was like listening to a stranger, he seemed so distant now.

“Sure.” He watched me walk in as if he was taking in all my moves. I sat down across from him and smiled my goofy Monica smile that always made him laugh, but not this time. He deliberately took long steps around his desk like a person in a hurry and took a deep breath. He placed both of his hands on his desk as if he was cleaning the surface.

“I have been avoiding this conversation for a while. I wasn’t sure how I was going to tell you, so ...”

I was full of panic. Was I losing my job? What would I do? This had been the only place I have ever worked. Where would I go? Kevin looked up at me and, detecting my panic, quickly went on talking.

“I have decided to leave the company.”

It came out in a rush; he couldn’t even make eye contact with me. His next statement was slower and sad.

“Monica, my last day is tomorrow.”

I was shocked and hurt that he would wait this long to tell me. “Tomorrow? What do you mean? You’re kidding, right?” My head was racing. Maybe he would take me with him. I always went everywhere with Kevin Golden. I was his executive assistant. “What does this mean for me? Are you taking me with you?”

He shifted in his chair. “No, I’m not. You will be fine, I made sure your position is secure here, and you will be assisting the next executive that takes my place.” He looked out of one of his windows at a helicopter that was flying close to the building.

I was stunned. He knew that when someone came in they usually brought their own assistant with them. “What do you mean you secured my position here? They didn’t even want to give me the position when you were taking it. What makes you think they will let me keep it now?”

He looked embarrassed and annoyed at the same time.
